With former New Jersey governor Chris Christie having officially departed the 2024 presidential race, that leaves Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley as the most viable candidates not named Donald Trump.
While I didn't view it live, the one-on-one CNN debate between DeSantis and Haley was quite contentious with the Florida governor dominating the affair. But like in 2016, substance takes a backseat to buffoonery, which is why Trump continues to dominate even in spite of crap like this:
I’m genuinely not trying to start a fight here but can any MAGA influencer truly explain this? pic.twitter.com/epizYyTdqx

I recall becoming a prolific user of "#NothingMatters" in many of my 2016 Twitter posts when Trump suffered no polling repercussions despite saying things on a daily basis that would have resulted in presidential candidates of yesteryear being drummed out their races. Amazingly, we're at that point once again.

This quote--"When the Facts Change, I Change My Mind. What Do You Do, Sir?"-- variously attributed to Winston Churchill or John Maynard Keynes, seems fully explanatory and counts, to me, as a plus for Trump. For example, Biden eliminated Trump's border policies on day one. That would appear to any honest observer as a major blunder at this point-- an undeniable fact. Has he done ANYTHING since to acknowledge that fact and change his "mind"?
I'm not comparing Trump to either of those esteemed historical figures; I consider him unique in some regards, so I don't think your attempt to apply certain rules applies. One I have long agreed with but does not, IMHO, is from Emerson, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."
I concur that the pandemic was unprecedented and thus decision makers could only go off the information they had then, which was fluid. The problem here is Trump never concedes that "facts change" because his frail ego can never acknowledge that he made mistakes (though, again, they couldn't necessarily be construed as missteps four years ago). Instead he utilizes his go-to method of gaslighting, which the Trump cultists don't have the stones to call him on because NOTHING MATTERS.
I consider him unique in some regards, so I don't think your attempt to apply certain rules applies.
So he should be free to lie and slander with impunity???? Not quite understanding your logic there.
Maybe I am misreading you, but it seems as if you are calling him a liar because he acknowledged the "new facts," changed his mind and perhaps (everybody has an ego, you know) wants credit for doing so, especially when he comes out, in the end, on the right side of the issue. As opposed to stubbornly NOT changing his "mind" and lying about everything else, like you-know-who does. I would call what /Biden/ does as "gaslighting" far more than Trump, because Biden's "truth" is so obviously out of touch with any known reality. Trump, OTOH, at worst, exaggerates a recognizable truth.
