Not really sure this is a hill to die on, but consider the source.
President Donald Trump is threatening to hold up a new stadium deal for Washington's NFL team if it does not restore its old name of the Redskins, which is considered offensive to Native Americans (Well.....1 out of 10 anyways - ed.).
Trump also said Sunday that he wants Cleveland's baseball team to revert to its former name, the Indians, saying there was a "big clamoring for this" as well.
The Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians have had their current names since their respective seasons in 2022, and both have said that they don't plan to change them back.
Trump said that the Commanders would be "much more valuable" if they restored their old name.
"I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington Redskins,' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington," Trump said on his social media site.
I'll never get used to Trump's bizarre tendencies, even though we've been enduring them for the past decade, whether he was POTUS or not. And since I strive to be a model of consistency, I concur that Trump's extortion tactics fly in the face of free markets. I will always cry foul when a government official essentially attempts to dictate how a private enterprise should conduct their business.
All that being said, I would be curious to see a Venn diagram of progs who are pitching a fit over Trump's actions here and progs who were perfectly OK 11 years ago when the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office canceling trademarks for the then Washington Redskins because certain bureaucrats deemed the nickname offensive (high profile elected Democrats endorsed this move, BTW). I'm guessing it would be darn near a perfect circle.
