Gov. Tim Walz recently announced that the special election to fill the MN House seat for the late Rep. Melissa Hortman will occur September 16. And while I don't reside in House District 34B, I definitely have a strong preference for a certain candidate I'd like to see prevail.
Republican Ruth Bittner filed to run on Friday. She is the latest candidate to toss her hat in the ring.
“All Minnesotans are still shocked at the tragedy of her death. We appreciate her service and the dedication she brought to her role in serving this state,” Bittner stated in a news release.
Bittner is currently a real estate agent. She began her career as a food scientist at Land O’Lakes.
She tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS she plans to have her website up by Thursday.
Bittner described her top three priorities to be:
- Common-sense budgets that bring back financial stability to Minnesota
- Safety and security in our streets and homes
- Restoration of “educational excellence” by supporting teachers and parents
“In these times of extreme partisanship, I can think of no more important mission than to restore the people’s trust in government,” she said. “I want to be a voice in the legislature that represents ALL people, and who is willing to reach across the aisle to negotiate for the good of all, even when issues are difficult.”
Bittner joins three Democrats who are also vying for the seat: Erickson Saye, Xp Lee and Christian Eriksen. Lee received the DFL endorsement for the seat.
Jennifer and I have known Ruth and her husband Greg since 1999. So if someone who's never met Ruth reads her quotes about how she'd legislate, said statements would likely be dismissed as typical political talking points. But since Ruth has never held elected office and is someone whom we know possesses the utmost integrity, I can 1000% guarantee she says what she means and means what she says.
