Yep! I still got it!!

Does anyone know who the first base umpire was in Game 7 of the 1991 World Series? If you were armed with that knowledge at 5:45 this evening, AM 1500 KSTP had four tickets to give you for the Monday, August 24th game against the Baltimore Orioles.

OK, part of the answer was given by sports guy Matt Thomas on Twitter prior to the trivia question being asked. But the subject was umpire Hunter Wendelstedt and his ongoing feud with Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. Anyhow, Wendelstedt's Dad was also a Major League Baseball umpire back in the day. Thus we were asked what is the senior Wendelstedt's first name and at which base did he umpire in that '91 World Series game. Since the answer to the second part was given, the fact I remembered the name of umpire Harry Wendelstedt won me the tickets!!

Often when I recite obscure facts and statistics about....well...any subject, I am greeted with the inquiry "WHY do you know all this???".

It can occasionally pay off!

I love it. When I was cubmaster of the pack in Rockford for 5 years, I would continually have trivia contests at all our major events: pinewood derby, Blue Gold Banquets, etc. I'd always tell the boys to keep on learning new things, because you never knew when you might be rewarded for knowing something that no one else did. Even if it was when they were adults.

That's a perfect example.

The good news -- you won. The bad news -- you won Twins tickets.

Having said that, KD is spot on. Learning new things is always a good idea. You never know where a little bit of information might pay off.

Worse news? They're upper deck general admission.

Oh well, I also won these same tickets back in April and gave them to a friend of mind. He took his two boys (ages 8 & 6) to their first baseball game and it was an experience of a lifetime for them.

I guess I can say there is some value in almost everything!
