So when did Abe Simpson become our President?

There are very few issues in politics today where leftists are more hyperbolic (or flat-out fabricators) than issues concerning guns. Yeah, President Joe Biden had some doozies at Tuesday's Wilkes-Barre, PA rally addressing gun violence. 

Here he calls out right wingers who fervently believe in the Founders' original intent when drafting the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution:

Uhhhh.....I've been reliably informed that scores of doofuses donning red MAGA hats or a buffalo costume were a bigger threat to America than the Al-Qaeda terrorists who perpetrated the 9/11/2001 attacks. And none of them the J6 rioters had guns.

Why'd ya call me on the phone?

Another overreach

The Democrats still see themselves as the party of the working class and middle class families. Whatever remained of that dissipating reputation should now be sent to the ash heap. 

President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced his long-awaited plan to deliver on a campaign promise to provide $10,000 in student debt cancellation for millions of Americans — and up to $10,000 more for those with the greatest financial need — along with new measures to lower the burden of repayment for their remaining federal student debt.

Borrowers who earn less than $125,000 a year, or families earning less than $250,000, would be eligible for the $10,000 loan forgiveness, Biden announced in a tweet. For recipients of Pell Grants, which are reserved for undergraduates with the most significant financial need, the federal government would cancel up to an additional $10,000 in federal loan debt.

Biden is also extending a pause on federal student loan payments for what he called the "final time" through the end of 2022.

Charles C. W. Cooke at National Review didn't mince words as to whom this adversely affects and why it was done.  

It seems so arbitrary. Why does Biden not want to do the same thing for loans on trucks owned by plumbers? Why not for mortgages — which, given how heavily it subsidizes them, the federal government clearly thinks are worthwhile? Why not for credit cards or auto payments or mom-and-pop credit lines? The answer, I’m afraid to say, is disgustingly classist: Because Joe Biden and his party believe that college students are better than everyone else. Because Joe Biden and his party believe that college students are of a finer cut. Because Joe Biden and his party prefer college students to you, and they think that those students ought to be rewarded for that by being handed enormous gobs of your money.

Electricians, store managers, deli workers, landscapers, waitresses, mechanics, entrepreneurs? Screw ’em. Sure, college graduates make more money than non-graduates, and their unemployment rate is lower, too. But non-graduates don’t have access to the president, so they don’t matter. They’re tradesmen, the riff-raff, the great unwashed. They’re background noise, dirty-handed types, second-classers. They don’t deserve $10,000 in debt reduction. What would they even do with it? Go hunting? Give it to their church? Their role is to subsidize the superior people, and the superior people go to college.

Why did Joe Biden do all this? That’s why. Why was this what Joe Biden chose to break his oath to achieve? That’s why. When it came down to it, good ol’ Scranton Joe sent cash from the sort of people he cynically pretends to care about to the sort of people he actually cares about: the privileged, accredited, self-dealing clerisy that his ever-dwindling political party now calls its base.

This move has been signaled ever since Biden took office 17 months ago but he kept kicking the proverbial can down the road, much to the chagrin of "progressives." I'm sure deep down he didn't want to do this knowing how, at minimum, it's a political loser, to say nothing of legally dubious. Heck, House Speaker Marie Antoinette Nancy Pelosi even tried to throw Biden a lifeline earlier this year.

As far as college grads (and, in some cases, their families) who fulfilled their obligations by paying off their loans or not taking them out in the first place? "Too bad, so sad" is essentially what you'll get from the likes of Fauxcahontas Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

The Dems have been feeling an air of confidence lately having passed the Climate Change bill Inflation "Reduction" Act as well as having their 2022 electoral prospects not looking nearly as bleak as they did earlier this year. But to stick the majority of Americans with extra taxes and debt to appease those who either have upper crust jobs or who wasted their loans on worthless college degrees won't keep voters in their good graces.

 - Well no wonder Gov. Tim Walz doesn't want to debate his GOP gubernatorial opponent Scott Jensen. He can lie indiscriminately and then avoid being called out in a public forum.

Let's focus on the abortion aspect of this statement. A Gov. Jensen will never be in a position to sign an abortion ban since the procedure is considered a "right" protected by the MN Constitution (see Doe v. Gomez). As such, there are two options to ban abortion. 1) the Supreme Court of MN overturning the Doe ruling (unlikely given the current makeup of the court and the fact there's no pending lawsuit) or 2) the MN Legislature passes a ballot initiative allowing voters to decide whether or not to amend the state Constitution.

There's only two plausible explanations for Walz spouting those chanting points: His not knowing that a governor has no impact on Minnesota's current abortion law or that he's flat out lying and thus believes voters are too naïve to know the difference.

- This midterm election cycle as of this past spring had been projected to be a "red wave." But as I've said in past election cycles when the GOP is projected to do well - never underestimate Republicans' ability to screw up things. And sure enough the GOP (as of now) looks to assume only a moderate sized majority in the U.S. House but fall short of wresting control of the Senate.

Quick Hits: Volume CCLXXXV

 - The city of Minneapolis made national news this past week. When that has happened over the past few years, it's typically not flattering. 

An agreement between the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers union and the school district states that White teachers will be laid off before teachers of color, regardless of their seniority.

The agreement, which was reached to end a two-week teacher strike last spring, says that starting this school year, "if excessing a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the site, the district shall excess the next least senior teacher, who is not a member of an underrepresented population."

Excessing teachers is the process by which staff are reduced at a particular school due to a drop in enrollment, funding or other reasons.

The agreement further goes on to say that when reinstating teachers, "the District shall prioritize the recall of a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the district."

Hmmm. If only we could come up with an adjective to describe prejudice against people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group.

Seriously though, sagas like this can be avoided if job status wasn't determined by these archaic seniority standards. Seems to me a meritocracy would be in the best interest of teachers and students. Or is merit now considered "privilege" these days? 

- It was one year ago this week when President Joe Biden made the decision to withdraw American forces from a near 20-year stint in Afghanistan. While such a move was correct (if not long overdue), the timing and execution of the withdrawal was a complete disaster. It was at that point where Biden's approval rating went underwater and has not been close to rebounding since. 

If you're wondering if the President will be in a position to face inquiries on this dubious anniversary, this will tell ya all you need to know:

- Normally there would be very little attention paid to the GOP primary election for Wyoming's only U.S. House seat. But we don't live in normal times. 

As expected, Congresswoman Liz Cheney, who heads up the January 6 Committee and was one of ten Republicans to vote for impeachment of President Donald Trump, was soundly defeated Tuesday evening by Harriet Hageman. 

Let's face it: Cheney's ouster was due solely to the fact she was anti-Trump. As such, you had other anti-Trumpers jumping around like poo flinging monkeys, shrieking ZOMG THIS IS A THREAT TO DEMOCRACY when in fact democracy worked perfectly. Wyoming voters overwhelmingly voted for Trump for President in 2016 (he garnered 68% of the vote) and 2020 (almost 70%). It stands to reason he's still very popular among the vast majority of residents there. Needless to say, voters were not enthused about Cheney's animosity towards Trump, so one could surmise her actions as not representing the interests of constituents. And when that happens, said constituents make their collective voices heard at the ballot box. 

In short --- THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE.

None of the above

Outside of individual candidates I support for elected office, there is only one political venue where I donate money regularly --- The MN Gun Owners Caucus. Not only is the organization's leadership incredibly knowledgeable and transparent, they don't make decisions based on whether or not they'll be popular with the majority of their members. They make decisions solely on what they deem the best possible course to advance 2nd Amendment rights. 

As such, MNGOC leadership conveyed why their Political Action Committee is not endorsing a candidate for MN governor this year. 

“We endorsed then-candidate Scott Jensen for Minnesota Senate in 2016, ” said Bryan Strawser, Chairman, MN Gun Owners Caucus. “He later betrayed his endorsement pledge by co-sponsoring two gun control bills.”

“While Governor Tim Walz has voiced nothing but disdain for the Second Amendment rights of Minnesotans, our organization must stand by our commitment to our members that Dr. Jensen would not be eligible for future endorsement by our organization, ” added Strawser.

As a Senator, Scott Jensen never voted for a gun control bill. He has voiced nothing but support for the 2nd Amendment in his campaign for Governor. At the June 2022 MNGOP Convention, Dr. Jensen apologized to the delegates for his previous support for gun control and reaffirmed his commitment to signing pro-2nd Amendment legislation if it hit his desk as Governor.

The Caucus has put together an informational website about Dr. Jensen’s record at ScottJensenOnGuns.com which explains his factual record on gun rights in great detail with links to source documents, audio clips, and videos.

“Voters will have to decide whether or not to trust Dr. Jensen with their Second Amendment rights, ” said Strawser.

I will go on record and say that I will cast my vote for Dr. Jensen and have decided to take him at his word that he will advocate for (and sign into law) legislation for Constitutional Carry as well as Stand Your Ground. Some may call me naïve and I certainly understand given his track record, but I can guarantee you one thing ---- there is a nonzero chance a Gov. Scott Jensen will sign into law pro-gun legislation. However, there is absolutely zero possibility a reelected Gov. Walz would do so. So from that standpoint, my choice is easy. 

Another thing to keep in mind is that even if Walz and Jensen had a similar anti-gun stance, there are a laundry list of other issues which clearly draws the distinction between the two candidates. I obviously can't speak for my fellow members of the MNGOC, but I would suspect they are genuinely concerned about salient issues outside of guns. I know I certainly am, which is why Dr. Jensen has my full support.

MN Primary recap

Just a few thoughts on some of the results from Minnesota's 2022 primary elections: 

- Radical leftist Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN-05) barely survived a challenge from former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels. Omar took in 50.35% of the vote to Samuels' 48.2%, which translated to 2,466 votes. 

Omar may have been ousted were it not for the futile campaign of MNGOP Attorney General candidate Doug Wardlow. After losing out on the party endorsement to Jim Schultz, Wardlow went back on his word by not abiding by the delegates' choice, thus going to a primary. Had Schultz not had a primary challenger, many of the usual GOP voters in CD5 would have voted in the DFL primary given that the US House race there is essentially the general election. And since 10,000 votes were cast in the GOP AG race in the Fifth CD (Wardlow himself took in 3,533), it's not hard to imagine that there would have been enough there to put Samuels over the top. As someone pointed out on Twitter, Wardlow has managed to extend the political careers of Keith Ellison (whom he lost to in the 2018 AG race thanks to a lackluster campaign) and Ilhan Omar. Heckuva legacy. 

- The Republican Party of Minnesota successfully defended all its endorsed statewide candidates, though there wasn't much doubt outside of the AG race. However, the GOP race for AG turned out to have little mystery as Schulz prevailed over Wardlow by a nearly 18-point margin. 

- Whether or not the GOP gains the majority in the MN House (need to flip only four seats), we can at least take heart in the fact DFLers Tinky Winky Ryan Winkler and John Thompson will not be returning. 

Winkler (who once made a racist remark about a SCOTUS justice, flipped off a sitting MN Senator and falsely accused a truck driver of being a white supremacist) chose not to seek reelection for his House seat, instead opting to run for Hennepin County Attorney. He was not one of the top two vote getters in that race, so he does not advance to the general election. 

Thompson, who was expelled from the DFL caucus after numerous infractions over a two year period, was handed a resounding defeat in the HD 67A DFL primary. The almost 78-point loss has to be the largest defeat an incumbent legislator has ever suffered. 

It was almost exactly two years ago when Thompson and a group of other Black Lives Matter-MN activists ventured up to the Hugo home of then Minneapolis Police union chief Bob Kroll, where they staged a protest in the family's driveway. Among the despicable acts were Thompson (fresh off becoming the DFL candidate for his MN House seat) screaming obscenities toward teenage girls watching from next door. There were also piñatas of Kroll and his wife Liz Collin being hung and beaten in effigy.  With that in mind, you can imagine how Collin reacted to the news of Thompson's defeat.

I don't know about you but I'm rather worn out by what seem to be monthly occurrences of living in "unprecedented times."

This certainly fits the bill though. 

Former President Trump on Monday said that his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida was "under siege" by a "large group" of FBI agents conducting a search warrant.

"Nothing like this has ever happened to a President of the United States before. After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate," Trump said. "It is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the Justice System, and an attack by Radical Left Democrats who desperately don't want me to run for President in 2024, especially based on recent polls, and who will likewise do anything to stop Republicans and Conservatives in the upcoming Midterm Elections."

"Such an assault could only take place in broken, Third-World Countries. Sadly, America has now become one of those Countries, corrupt at a level not seen before," Trump said, alleging that the FBI agents broke into his safe.

One of the first reactions I saw on Twitter came from David Axelrod, former Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama. 

One thing is very clear.
Garland would not have authorized this raid, and no federal judge would have signed off on it, if there weren't significant evidence to warrant it.

Sorry David, but that's not going to blunt any cynicism. Heck, we need to look no further than how the flimsy Steele Dossier was used to trigger an expansive investigation over whether or not Trump was a Russian asset. And how about when former Trump associate Carter Page was spied on, only to later learn two of the FISA warrants were invalid? So while no one (even a U.S. President) is above the law, I think we all need to reserve judgement until we know more. 

All that being said, we as Americans need to demand transparency on this saga, and a sufficient explanation needs to happen posthaste. Even leftist former Gov. Andrew Cuomo understands this. 

DOJ must immediately explain the reason for its raid & it must be more than a search for inconsequential archives or it will be viewed as a political tactic and undermine any future credible investigation & legitimacy of January 6 investigations.

I don't think anyone summed up my feeling about this better than Andrew Yang, who was one of many Dem presidential candidates in 2020. 

 

I’m no Trump fan. I want him as far away from the White House as possible. But a fundamental part of his appeal has been that it’s him against a corrupt government establishment. This raid strengthens that case for millions of Americans who will see this as unjust persecution.

One final thought that could quell a lot of the "hot takes:" I would assume that Trump himself received a copy of the search warrant. Why doesn't he take the initiative and release the contents of said warrant? If this search was as egregious as Trump suggested, why wouldn't he take the steps to fortify his case?

Futile

Former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney cut a campaign ad on behalf of daughter (and three term Congresswoman) Liz Cheney, who is facing an uphill battle for the GOP nomination for Wyoming's only U.S. House seat.

As an aside, did anyone else notice that VP Cheney barely blinked during that entire diatribe? Was he slipped the same medication that President Joe Biden is being administered? 

I digress. 

While I've made no secret of the fact that I hope Donald Trump doesn't run again (as well as firmly believing he's unfit), I stop well short of saying he's the biggest threat our Republic has faced in its 246 years. Seems to me the hyperbolic former Veep is steep in "recency bias."

In the end, I look at this video screed as little more than a father standing up for his daughter as well as making a vow that Liz will ensure Trump never sees the Oval Office again. While this will likely not assist Congresswoman Cheney in winning the GOP nod for her House seat, it serves as a message that if she's struck down she'll become more powerful than we can possibly fathom.....or something. A rather ironic implication given that Dick Cheney himself was often chided as "Darth Vader" while serving as Vice President.

 As someone who votes predominantly GOP, I'm disappointed that Herschel Walker is the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate out of Georgia. His woeful lack of insight on even basic political issues will not bode well for his candidacy in a debate with incumbent Dem Sen. Raphael Warnock. That said, the Dems are once again overplaying their advantage (not to mention projecting) when going after Walker's flawed candidacy.

Calling out Walker on his lack of substance is absolutely fair game, just like it is to point out the blithering nonsense coming from VP Kamala Harris and White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. The difference is, substantively attacking minority Dems still gets Republicans labeled as racist whereas the Dems can openly flaunt their bigotry with nary a consequence. 

Again, Urban Progressive Privilege is a real thing y'all.
