Quick Hits: Volume CCCVIII

 - More than a week after Donald Trump announced he would be indicted by a Manhattan grand jury, the official announcement came down Thursday evening that it's finally happening

That conservative rag that is the Washington Post questioned the legitimacy of this indictment

Pyramiding two transgressions of state rules to go after a federal candidate is legally plausible. But the strategy is also novel, and courts may regard it with skepticism. What’s more, the potential campaign finance charge itself is shaky.

Breaches of campaign finance law undermine democracy and deserve to be taken seriously. Yet the potential downsides of indicting Mr. Trump ought to be taken seriously, too. This prosecution is now bound to be the test case for any future former president, as well as, of course, proceedings against this former president in particular — of which there are plenty. Other investigations underway include Justice Department examinations of the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection and classified documents discovered at Mar-a-Lago, where the possibility of obstruction of justice is particularly grave. These are straightforward cases compared with the one proceeding in Manhattan. A failed prosecution over the hush-money payment could put them all in jeopardy, as well as provide Mr. Trump ammunition for his accusations of “witch hunt” — in light of which House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was right to urge supporters to refrain from protesting.

Public perception and political strategy shouldn’t dissuade a district attorney from bringing a solid case, but neither should they persuade him to bring a shaky one. This prosecution needs to be airtight. Otherwise, it’s not worth continuing.

As someone who would love to see Trump not be the GOP presidential candidate in 2024, I prefer he be taken down legitimately, whether it's due to his other (and more serious) legal woes or being defeated in the Republican primary. And if his biggest detractors are being honest, they would concede that this only galvanizes support for Trump in '24. While I believe he would ultimately lose in the general election, does the anti-Trump crowd really want to chance a repeat of 2016?

Bottom line is Trump needs to go away, but this stunt achieves the exact opposite effect.

- Two U.S. House reps went toe-to-toe over how to handle gun legislation in the aftermath of the Covenant school shooting earlier this week.

This is a helpful lesson whenever someone shrieks "DO SOMETHING!!!!!!" in the aftermath of a spree killing. But when "something" is suggested, the gun grabbers always pivot to inhibiting legal gun ownership. So why is it that grabbers don't care about kids' safety?

- I saw this graphic earlier in the week and found it somewhat depressing.

However, professional pollster Patrick Ruffini indicates that the polling methodology (online in 2023; via phone in 2019) is a key distinction

Why should this matter? After all, panelists on NORC’s Amerispeak panel are recruited probabilistically, using the same random sampling methods as a telephone survey. It’s more expensive, but when when you want online data that looks as close as possible to the old gold-standard telephone survey data, you use NORC’s Amerispeak.

But survey mode still matters. Surveying the exact same types of respondents online and over the phone will yield different results. And it matters most for exactly the kinds of values questions that the Journal asked in its survey.

The basic idea is this: if I’m speaking to another human being over the phone, I am much more likely to answer in ways that make me look like an upstanding citizen, one who is patriotic and values community involvement. My answers to the same questions online will probably be more honest, since the format is impersonal and anonymous. So, the 2023 survey probably does a better job at revealing the true state of patriotism, religiosity, community involvement, and so forth. The problem is that the data from previous waves were inflated by social desirability bias—and can’t be trended with the current data to generate a neat-and-tidy viral chart like this.

That all may be true, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that traditional American values are absurdly low. Apparently they've just been on a decline at a much slower pace than the WSJ/NORC poll have led us to believe. Still depressing though.

Exploit first, seek realistic solutions never

I will never accept it as "the times we live in" when I hear news of innocent people being gunned down. In addition to the murders of three employees of Covenant School in Nashville, TN, three nine-year old students also were killed by a female shooter identifying as a trans man. In addition to the heartbreak that the victims' families endure knowing they have to bury their loved ones, they must now be subjected to their deceased family members being used as political pawns.

I will also not concede as normal the leftist demagoguery that always ensues before the victims' bodies are even cold. These soulless ghouls insist that if only NRA-lovin' Republicans would have supported leftist gun control initiatives, these incidents would have never occurred. How they can make this claim literally within 2-3 hours of a shooting spree when so few facts are ascertained I'll never know.

By now the leftist playbook on addressing mass shootings (except those which occur every weekend in Chicago) is as predictable as the western sunset:

  • Within minutes of news breaking, exploit the incident by laying blame on an inanimate object (i.e. the gun), the NRA, and Republicans.
  • If the shooter is "non-traditional," (i.e. a reliable member of the leftist voting bloc), blame Republican policies for stirring up the gunman's anger.
  • When the facts of the incident inevitably puncture lefty narratives, deflect attention by moving on to the next outrage or engage in perpetual gaslighting about the incident (some people to this day believe the gunshot wounds suffered by then Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in early 2011 were a direct result of Sarah Palin's political action committee placing a crosshair symbol on a map of Giffords' Congressional district).

And while many leftists shriek "SPEECH IS VIOLENCE" and thus attempt to tie a violent incident to "right wing rhetoric," they never hold themselves to that same standard, even when a more plausible link can be determined. Remember how just over a month after America's favorite commie grandpa said a GOP healthcare bill would result in thousands of Americans dying, a number of Republican Congressman were shot at by a deranged Bernie bro? Heck, Sen. Sanders even doubled down on that claim less than two weeks later

Urban Progressive Privilege is real. Examples?

How about soon-to-be-former-Chicago-Mayor Lori Lightfoot last year?

And what could potentially happen when a mentally ill person hears this spoon-fed pablum about how they'll be a victim of genocide?

Then you have the Press Secretary for the Governor of Arizona tweeting this out a mere 12 hours after the Nashville tragedy.

Perhaps the most vile aspect of this episode is the suggestion by some that the six innocent victims murdered are not even the most aggrieved.

Whether trans individuals are murdered in cold blood (like at Club Q) or actually commit the murders, they're the victims regardless. Very convenient.

In the end, this boils down to a simple fact: We live in a fallen world. Evil exists. Those who look to execute a mass shooting know full well they'll at best go to jail for the rest of their natural lives or at worst die at the hands of law enforcement. As such, shooters look for a "soft target" in which they're able to commit as many atrocities as possible before their spree ends.

The Covenant shooter was no different.

The solution is obvious: have heightened armed security in such areas or allow law abiding gun owners to exercise their rights. I know gun grabbers shriek like stuck pigs when this is suggested, but it is literally the most effective deterrent to spree killings.

Contrary to the grabbers' belief, we 2A advocates want to work together to stem the tide of these senseless killings. However, when they put forth the hyperbolic false choice of "the kids or the guns," it's sadly obvious that these aren't sane, rational people.

Box Score of the Week

 Baseball is back, baby!!!!!!!!!

Since Opening Day is this week, let's look back at a memorable opener from 2011 when the Los Angeles Dodgers hosted the San Francisco Giants - March 31, 2011.

-----------------------------------------

This game featured the first ever Opening Day start for Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw. In taking on the defending World Series champions, Kershaw pitched seven shutout innings for the win. 2011 would also prove to be a breakout season for the young lefty as he won the National League Cy Young award in addition to winning the NL pitching "Triple Crown" (i.e. led the league in Wins, E.R.A and strikeouts).

I open up the throttle and stir a little dust......

Hard to believe this is the last Sunday in March. The first quarter of 2023 is almost gone, but there's still plenty to get into in today's edition of my radio show The Closer. The 2-hour blitz begins right at 1:00 PM Central Time.

In the first hour, I'll discuss crazed loser Donald Trump becoming even more unhinged in the face of an indictment which never happened. Also, has Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis semi-officially jumped into the 2024 presidential race?

In Minnesota news, a prominent male prog legislator has been cited by USA Today as "woman of the year."

Then in the second hour I will have two guests joining me via phone. At 2:00, Newsmax TV's chief White House correspondent James Rosen will join the broadcast to discuss his latest book Scalia: Rise to Greatness. This book looks back at the life of the late Antonin Scalia, specifically the first 50 years of his life leading up to his confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. Then at 2:30, Patrick Hughes of the National Opportunity Project will check in to discuss a study commissioned by NOP which looks into $736 million in K-12 federal COVID aid never reaching the classroom.

So please call (651) 289-4488 if you'd like to weigh in on any of the topics we plan on addressing.

You can listen live in the Twin Cities at AM 1280 or, if you're near downtown Minneapolis/West Metro area, 107.5 FM on your radio dial. In and out of the Minneapolis-St Paul area you can listen to the program on the Internet by clicking this link, or check us out via iheart radio as well as Amazon Alexa (just say "Alexa, play The Patriot Minneapolis")If you're unable to tune in live, please check out my podcast page for the latest show post.

Thuggish

A shocking incident occurred Thursday evening following a Women's National Invitational Tournament college basketball game.

The Memphis player is Jamirah Shutes, who was playing in her final college basketball game. And given that was indeed her last collegiate contest, Ms. Shutes won't have to worry about any suspensions from the NCAA.

But when it comes to legal repercussions? Well, that's going to be addressed in due time.

Are we allowed to speculate on the possibility that this incident had racial overtones given Shutes is black and her victim, Elissa Brett, is white? I say that because I guarantee there would've been a helluva lot more than mere speculation were the roles reversed.

Quick Hits: Volume CCCVII

 - Despite not yet having declared a 2024 run for President, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has drawn the ire of Donald Trump and his performative leg humpers. Then over the weekend when Trump announced he would likely be arrested on Tuesday over charges filed the the Manhattan District Attorney, Trumpkins insisted DeSantis come forward and call out this perceived political witch hunt.

While DeSantis had no obligation to do so, his responses when asked about this saga proves he has more political acumen in his pinky toe than Trump and his bobos collectively.

DeSantis effectively calls out the Soros-funded D.A. while side stepping any unnecessary verbal jabs towards Trump himself. But since DeSantis didn't kiss the proverbial ring, crazed loser Trump fired off one of his obligatory unhinged social media posts.

Trump has this innate gift of turning the potential of being a sympathetic character into his becoming a despised, frothing kook. It's truly a gift.

- Speaking of unsympathetic characters, some 2-year old video footage came out of Dr. Anthony Fauci attempting to basically sell the COVID-19 vaccine door-to-door.

Huh. Musta been that MAGA-ite misinformation that got to these folks in that conservative mecca of....uh...Washington, D.C.

- It's fortuitous that my friend David Strom is now part of the national conservative powerhouse blog that his HotAir.com. Given our fair state of Minnesota is in the habit of making national news for all of the wrong reasons, Strommie has a front row seat to all the lunacy.

The latest being Minnesota's most prominent woman these days is actually......a biological male

(Minnesota State Rep. Leigh) Finke must be one impressive “woman,” since “she” rose from being just a guy to the most impactful woman in my state is less than 6 years. It’s the same path that transgender athletes take so often: a mediocre man becomes an exceptional woman, not through hard work, diligence, accomplishment, or anything similar. They do it by pretending to be a woman, and the rest of society applauds them and plays along.

We are constantly lectured about The Science™, and indeed there of plenty of people who call themselves scientists who argue that natal males and females can shed their sex and transform magically into another, or none at all.

We get lectures about seahorse sexuality, natal males getting cervical cancer without having a cervix, transgender female periods, and other irrelevancies and fantasies. Every biology textbook has been tossed out the window for no other reason than to flatter the delusions of mentally ill people.

And it isn’t even disputable that they are mentally ill and deserving of compassion. “Dysphoria” is by definition a mental state, and the only evidence that a person is “born in the wrong body” (an absurdity) is the claim. Logically there is zero difference between that claim and the claim that a person is an eagle trapped in a human body. Or a space alien. Or whatever.

I've asked this question before and I'll ask again: Where are the old school radical feminists? The essence of their movement, which started about a half century ago, was that women endured unique challenges which men could not possibly understand, much less relate to. Yet in today's society we're to believe that men can not only relate to women but can actually morph into the gender????

Since radical feminists and LGBTQ+ folks typically vote for the same stripe of politicians, I'm guessin' the old school gals are willing to "go along to get along" to ensure the right people get into office. Plus one for the patriarchy in this case.

The bugle sounds, the charge begins......

Another Sunday, yet another edition of my radio show The Closer. The 2-hour blitz begins at 1:00 PM Central Time.

In the first hour I'll weigh in on some local news, including progressive elected officials' ineptitude on dealing with crime. Also, a Vikings' fan favorite moves on.

Then in the second hour I will discuss Fox News Channel's Tucker Carlson releasing never before seen footage of the 1/6/2021 U.S. Capitol riots. I will also opine on the idiocy put forth by U.S. House Democrats in questioning the journalists behind the release of the "Twitter files."

So please call (651) 289-4488 if you'd like to weigh in on any of the topics we plan on addressing.

The lunacy continues

For those of you who have school aged children (or recall when your kids were of that age), you'd likely concede that indulging in every single one of their wants and desires is not at all practical. Heck, I recall thinking my mother was a brutal dictator when she didn't allow me to have for dessert chocolate frosting right out of the container. Worse yet, I was not at all taken seriously when 9-year old me declared he wanted to join Luke Skywalker and the rest of the Rebel Alliance to assist in bringing down the evil Empire.

If only someone like MN Lt Gov Peggy Flanagan were around then. She woulda had my back.

So if a 3-year old boy wants to be a girl, parents need to acquiesce to that. But if 20 years later that trans woman commits murder in the state of Maryland, she could potentially avoid being charged with a felony because her brain "is not fully developed."

I'm getting to the point where I'm looking to get off this ride.

Crime and (relatively low) punishment

When someone is killed with a gun, progs seem to emit more outrage toward the firearm as opposed to the person pulling the trigger.

But blaming a car jacking on.....the car???? That's a new one.

Minnesota’s attorney general announced Tuesday he’s launched a civil investigation into Kia and Hyundai’s sale of vehicles that he says don’t have industry-standard anti-theft technology.

Thefts of such vehicles increased 611% in St. Paul and 836% in Minneapolis last year compared with 2021. Thieves have been able to break into Kia and Hyundai vehicles and start them relatively easily and quickly without keys, according to law enforcement.

“Broken glass, stolen cars, shattered lives,” Attorney General Keith Ellison said at a Tuesday news conference. “Thousands of Minnesotans have returned from shopping, school and work only to find that their car has been stolen. … And in tragic cases, those stolen cars have been involved in crimes — crashes that have resulted in death, that have resulted in injury, and they have resulted in great harm.”

Ellison’s office served civil investigative demands on Kia and Hyundai Tuesday, which he says will require them to produce documents and answer questions under oath. The plan is to gather information to determine whether the vehicle manufacturers violated Minnesota’s consumer protection and public nuisance laws “by their actions and inactions,” Ellison said. A possible next step could be a lawsuit.

Rep. Zack Stephenson (DFL-Coon Rapids) also weighed in.

This is almost on par with a rape victim being lectured on how she shouldn't wear such provocative clothing or a person getting mugged in a rough neighborhood being chided for walking around in that area after dark.

Let's face it: this is merely a clever attempt to deflect away attention from criminals (the majority of whom are repeat offenders) who would not be committing these offenses were it not for the light punishment handed down for previous crimes.

Speaking of which, here's a situation where likely repeat offenders were churned out:

It was conveyed to Hennepin County voters last year that this "restorative justice" would be pervasive if Ms. Moriarty were elected HenCo Attorney. She garnered 57% of the vote anyways, with the largest portion coming from high crime areas.

To quote former NYC Mayor Ed Koch - "The people have spoken.....and they will be punished."

Transparency on J6 deep-sixed

I've long maintained that the unrest at the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021 was not the darkest day in 246 years of our Republic, but it certainly wasn't a "peaceful protest" either.

On his Fox News program Monday evening, Tucker Carlson released previously unseen video footage from that day. While I still believe that there are some of the Capitol stormers who have been rightly charged with a crime and thus deserve the jail sentences that were handed down, it would appear a good number of people could make the case they were victims of prosecutorial overreach.

The "protesters" milling around the inside of the Capitol (some even staying within the velvet rope lines, other escorted by Capitol police) were trespassing. We can't overlook that. But the idea they were involved in some grand conspiracy to overthrow the government (which the walking cadaver in the White House believes can only be done with F-15s and nukes anyhow) while taking "selfies" seems far fetched. As such, the unconscionably long jail sentences they received does not appear to fit the crime.

Naturally the questions posed in the aftermath of seeing this footage was why it wasn't available during the Jan. 6 show trials. Certainly the likes of GOP Congressmen Kevin McCarthy and Jim Jordan were pushing for that when the J6 Committee was formed.  Hot Air's Ed Morrissey broached that issue

Nancy Pelosi successfully blocked skeptical Republicans from serving on the committee, who might have highlighted these videos and their nuance early in the process. That could have allowed for a fuller, more accurate understanding of the riot, the Capitol Police response, and the actual threat level inside the Capitol that day. Clearly violence took place, because that’s also on video and in physical evidence in the form of police officers injured by attacks. But as is becoming clear, at least a good portion of the trespassing may have been just that — trespassing — and not an insurrection.

Instead, Pelosi cooked the committee and the committee cooked the narrative. And as one could easily predict, the national media swallowed it and acted as Pelosi’s amplifier rather than ask any serious questions about what really transpired on January 6. I’d call that another big issue, but by this time the media’s collusion with the Beltway establishment is so well known as to be understood.

It is my sincere hope that those who have received unjustifiably long prison sentences will benefit from the release of these videos. Again, not every one of those protestors scaled the exterior of the Capitol building, fought law enforcement or engaged in vandalism.

All that said, I would urge the pro-Trump crowd to resist going on offense with the J6 incident as a whole. Political righties chafed at the leftist media characterization that protests in the summer of 2020 were "mostly peaceful." And rightly so. But if Trumpkins believe they have some moral high ground to refer to the 1/6/2021 incident as "mostly peaceful," then they're just as dishonest and delusional as the legacy media.

Quick Hits: Volume CCCVI

The former Governor of Maryland was out before he got in.

Given that Hogan is a "pro choice" and pro "gun control" Republican, he would have gotten very little traction to be the 2024 nominee. However, my concern was he would've been so steadfast in redefining today's Republican party (i.e. dragging it to the center) that he would've pulled a John Kasich circa 2016 by playing spoiler against the non-Trump candidates.

It'll be interesting to see if Hogan endorses any of the GOP candidates before the matter is settled. He said last month that he doesn't believe Trump will ultimately be the nominee, but he wouldn't commit to backing Trump if he somehow is the Republican candidate in '24.

- If all you saw was the following video footage,......

.....how would you have known that leftist terrorist group Antifa was responsible had Andy Ngo not called them out? Simple. CNN's coverage of the attack mentions neither "left" nor "Antifa."

- My wife and I saw the movie Jesus Revolution over the weekend. It's a film based on the true story of the late 1960s/early 1970s spiritual movement which led many thousands of individuals to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

While I knew of this great movement only on the periphery, it was inspiring to see how it all came together. It was also encouraging in that the challenges many young people faced in the late '60s (i.e. feelings of hopelessness in a seemingly broken world, a longing to be loved unconditionally, etc.) are similar to what Gen Z and younger millennials are struggling with today. I don't believe it's a mistake that the recent occurrence of the Asbury revivals has gained so much interest and notoriety.

Anyhow, I highly recommend checking out the film. Even if you're a believer already, definitely bring along some non-believing or unchurched friends and be prepared to discuss.

Thank you Jesus for this wonderful witnessing opportunity!

I'll be back in the Patriot bunker this afternoon for my weekly radio show The Closer. The 2-hour extravaganza gets started at 1:00 Central Time.

In the first hour I'll discuss local issues, including DFL legislators continuing with their radical policy proposals.

Then in the second hour, I'll weigh in on how a lot of media narratives were busted when the FBI and Dept of Energy both suggested that COVID-19 very well could have originated from a "lab leak." Also, the out of control spin on the U.S. Supreme Court's hearing of the case to toss President Biden's student loan debt "cancelation."

So please call (651) 289-4488 if you'd like to weigh in on any of the topics we plan on addressing.

Fecklessness at my alma mater

As a graduate of St Paul's Harding High School, I was shocked and devastated over the recent news of a stabbing death at the school. Sure, in my time at the school from 1983 thru 1987, I witnessed my fair share of tussles, some of which turned bloody. But the idea any could have wound up in someone's violent death was foreign to me. Sadly there's almost an air of inevitability when a student's death occurs these days.

In an interview with the St Paul Pioneer Press in the aftermath of 15-year old Devin Scott being stabbed to death, a handful of Harding's teachers aired their frustrations over the lack of response to their sounding the proverbial alarm bells.

In separate interviews, each teacher said the school has grown increasingly dangerous in recent years. Between 40 and 70 students routinely roam the hallways instead of going to class, they said, and harassment and drug use in bathrooms is common enough that many students either hold their bladders or go to the nurse’s office.

Teachers, students and parents complain to administrators, but efforts to clean things up, such as requiring ID badges and bathroom passes, are quickly abandoned or inconsistently enforced.

“The issue at Harding has been an absolute profound lack of leadership, a distrust between the administration and teachers, no support,” one teacher said. “We’ve been saying this for years: Somebody’s going to get hurt because there’s no control in the hallways.”

Asked what Harding had done before the stabbing to address safety concerns, district officials pointed to the addition of school and community support liaisons, the district employees who have taken the place of contract security guards and school resource officers and who are expected to build relationships with students.

Officials also said staff and administrators have received new two-way radios and extensive safety training. And the district last fall brought in a community mentor to help Harding students de-escalate conflicts plus a full-time therapist for mental health support.

“SPPS strives to create welcoming school environments where each and every student is seen, known and valued. We continually work to build positive school cultures and to hold students accountable for inappropriate behavior,” the district said.

It's time to be brutally honest: the feel good crap from "community support liaisons" who "build relationships" with students needs to be replace with armed resource officers. Just the knowledge that an adult proficient in firearms is present in the hallways would be a remarkable deterrent to violent situations which have the potential to spin out of control. A family member of the slain young man concurs.

Just last week the Pioneer Press published a story on how public school enrollment has declined over the past few years, while registration for charter and private schools has significantly increased. That trend will only accelerate in light of what has occurred at Harding High.

Quick Hits: Volume CCCV

 - Politicians reneging on campaign promises once they're elected is a story as old as time. But to go back on your word which promises to assist senior citizens with over-taxation of their fixed income is pretty brazen.

Freshman Rep. Elliott Engen offered up a reminder to those who made such promises on the trail.

The state of Minnesota has a near $18 billion budget surplus and is one of the few states in the country which taxes Social Security benefits, yet DFLers are so addicted to spending that they can't even let go of this one revenue stream. This is yet another piece of pavement being laid down on that path to becoming a cold California.

- The guy who covers the U.S. Supreme Court for The Economist spun off this gem the other day.

This is a classic example of what happens when there is no coherent legal argument to defend making fiscal policy via executive fiat. That is, pretend that Federal judiciary decisions should be subject to popular appeal as opposed to...oh I dunno...THEIR FREAKIN' LEGAL STANDING!!!

- The disastrous 4-year tenure of Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has mercifully come to an end.

I wonder if voters, when casting votes for Lightfoot's opponents, yelled "THIS IS MAGA COUNTRY!!!"

But I digress.

The best news out of all this? The fact Mayor Lightfoot's poor performance trumped the multiple checkmarks on the intersectionality scorecard. That there is the true spirit of "equality."
