Obligatory #NationalStudentWalkout post

As promised, thousands of high school students across the country walked out of class for 17 minutes on Wednesday. This was a tribute to the 17 people killed at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL four weeks ago when a crazed gunman walked in and opened fire for four uninterrupted minutes. The walkout doubled as a protest as students demanded that elected officials enact legislation imposing tighter "gun control."

Look, I'm not going to rehash all the data which strongly suggests "gun control" will do nothing to alleviate the issue of spree killings. I'm also not going to universally condemn the students who participated in this movement, as I am certain many are sincere despite being woefully misguided.

I am curious about one thing, however. I wonder how many of the students who participated in that walkout routinely browse on their smartphones while driving. I don't know the exact statistics but I am willing to bet that more young people are injured or killed as a result of texting & driving than in mass shootings.

Since "honest conversations" are suddenly en vogue, how about starting with a deadly issue that is actually pervasive among young people, particularly high school students. Just a thought.

  1. Sorry, but that would be expecting adult-level thinking out of kids. Despite the occasional kid wise beyond their years, and the occasional adult capable of adult-level thinking, it's pretty difficult to imagine this mass hysteria being a rational approach to ANY problem.

  2. There were some students yesterday who held up protest signs defending the 2nd amendment. They were asked to leave the walkout.

It's pretty clear that anti-gun adults are exploiting these kids in an attempt to advocate for "gun control" since these same gun grabbing adults have failed at every turn to persuade legislators. "How can Congress jeopardize these kids' futures?" is how they're framing it. Pretty disgusting.

  3. For me, the thing with the Florida atrocity is that pretty much every government agency involved screwed things up big time. Solution to that problem: give government more power.

    Yeah, that'll work.

  4. Ask them to define gun control and I'll bet they are clueless. To me it is 6 in the 10 ring at 20 yards.

But of course they live in the same fantasyland as our liberal legislators, thinking they can repeal the laws of human nature, along with the laws of physics and chemistry. Do these kids know that EVERY mass school shooting since 1990 has occurred in a gun-free zone?
