Super Bowl XLIII recap.

As Minneapolis native Larry Fitzgerald gave the Arizona Cardinals a 23-20 lead late in Super Bowl XLIII, I figured the Pittsburgh Steelers were done for. Their offense was utterly inept in the second half, scoring only three points up to that point. I was also ready to write a blog post unloading on QB Ben Roethlisberger. After a nice first half, he led the ineptitude.

Ah, but reports of Big Ben's demise was greatly exaggerated. Remember, this is the guy who in his five year career had engineered 17 fourth quarter comebacks.

With 2:37 left in the fourth quarter, Big Ben led his offense on a 78-yard drive culminating in a brilliant 6-yard touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes, who made one of the more acrobatic TD catches in Super Bowl history. With 35 seconds to go the Steelers led 27-23 and held on for the victory.

So where does this place Big Ben in Steelers lore? Well unlike the church of Roethlisberger, I don't believe he is the best Pittsburgh QB of all time. But give it time. He may well be within the next five years!!

By the way, I'd be remiss if I didn't pass on kudos to my pal Mr. D. He was spot on with his Super Bowl prognostication!
