Once again, the third week of April brings tragedy.

What is it about the third week in April?

-April 19, 1993. Tragedy occurred in Waco, TX. Certifiable kook Cult leader David Koresh and 73 of his followers were killed as their compound burned to the ground.

-April 19, 1995. A Federal building in Oklahoma City, OK was bombed in a terrorist attack which claimed 168 lives and left over 800 others injured.

-April 20, 1999. One word – COLUMBINE. At Columbine High School in Littleton, CO, two students opened fire, killing 12 and wounding 24 others before turning the guns on themselves.

And today, April 16, 2007. The shocking events which took place at Virginia Tech University, resulting in the largest shooting rampage in modern US history. In all, 33 people died, including the gunman after taking his own life.

Is it merely a coincidence that some of the most highly publicized mass killings in US history have taken place around this time of year? There was some urban legend floating around after the Columbine incident which stated the three major incidents took place to commemorate Adolf Hitler’s birthday, which is April 20.

I don’t know how much weight that theory holds. One thing I do know for sure is over the past 14 years we have observed some horrific and senseless loss of life this time of year.

Our prayers go out to the families of all the victims.

  1. no kidding...I've been wondering about why bad things happen this time every year (roughly) for years, and every year, I forget about it until the April tragedy occurs. Strange.

  2. i think only the columbine event had anything to do with the "Hitler birthday" OKC was directly related to aniversery of waco massacre by federal agents. V-tech shooter, I think made references to other events, so,I think NOW you sort of have an undeclared week of vengence occurring around this time of year. the old beware of the Ides of march has moved to April. and just think it all starterd because of bad decision of ATF, and their pride hurt, the retalliation on waco. now we have what people are comming to recognize as "THE WEEK OF VEGENCE" third week of April- LOOK OUT!

  4. The Titanic sank on April 15th and it is also the date of Lincoln's Assasination. The Columbine shooters were not concerned with Hitler's Birthday, they had planned the attack for the 19th to coincide with Waco and the Oklahoma City Bombing but they had to move it back a day due to unforeseen issues with equipment. The Bataan Death March took place from April 10-18 during World War II, 6,000-11,000 people died during that span of time.
